Hello, beautiful sacred souls. Today, I want to explore a topic that is deeply alive and essential to healing: the intersection of spirituality, trauma healing, and nervous system regulation.
Many spiritual teachings emphasize heart alignment, high vibration, trusting your soul, manifestation, or ascension. While these concepts are beautiful and inspiring, they often do not account for trauma or nervous system conditioning.
From a trauma-informed perspective, this is crucial: if your nervous system does not feel safe, the body cannot fully follow the heart. Spiritual teachings that suggest we simply “align” or “raise our vibration” can unintentionally create shame, self-blame, or spiritual bypassing—even when the teachings themselves are loving and well-intentioned.
Trauma is not a mindset problem; it’s a physiological survival adaptation. For those who grew up without emotional safety, attuned care, or consistency, the nervous system learns to prioritize protection over connection. Common survival adaptations include:
Even for those without early trauma, our society continually exposes us to stressors that can train the nervous system to remain in survival mode. Traditional spiritual teachings often miss this, because the language of trauma, nervous system regulation, and somatic healing is relatively new in human history.
Here’s a trauma-informed truth that has been life-changing for me:
Alignment is not something we force or acquire. It naturally returns as internal safety is restored.
Healing is not about striving to become someone new—it’s about remembering who you were before survival adaptations took over. This remembering happens through:
When these foundations are in place, heart alignment, trust in your inner compass, and spiritual integration emerge naturally, without pressure or shame.
From a trauma-informed lens, spirituality is not about leaving the body behind or achieving ascension. It’s about integration, presence, and wholeness.
Spirit moves through a healed nervous system, through safety, regulation, and connection. This is where mysticism meets neuroscience, and where spiritual awakening becomes accessible and sustainable for trauma survivors and sensitive souls alike.
If you’ve ever felt broken, behind, or “not evolved enough” in your spiritual practice, hear this clearly:
If this approach resonates with you, my book The Divine Within: Healing Ourselves to Heal the World offers guidance and exercises that bridge spirituality, psychology, neuroscience, and trauma-informed healing.
