How to Develop Spiritual Discernment

A Step-by-Step Guide From My Lived Experience

A Note Before We Begin

Everything I share in this blog comes from my personal understanding and lived experience—as a trauma survivor, a therapist, and someone who has spent years exploring intuitive and spiritual awareness. I always invite you to explore these concepts yourself, stay curious, and discover what feels true for you.

What Is Spiritual Discernment?

Spiritual discernment is the ability to clearly perceive, interpret, and understand spiritual, intuitive, or energetic guidance.
It is a skill that helps you:

  • Stay grounded
  • Stay emotionally and physically safe
  • Understand what belongs to you and what does not
  • Discern trauma from intuition
  • Distinguish your voice from the collective
  • Tune into the divine field without fear, confusion, or distortion

Discernment isn’t skepticism—it’s clarity, alignment, and self-trust.

Start With Awareness: Arriving in Your Body

Before tapping into any intuitive or spiritual guidance, the first step is to arrive fully in your body.

Take a moment to breathe.

  • Don’t force or control the breath—simply observe it.
  • When you're ready, allow your breath to deepen.
  • Let the inhalation and exhalation become balanced.

This simple presence begins the discernment process by calming your system and strengthening your awareness.

Why Your Nervous System Matters

When your nervous system is activated, stressed, or dysregulated:

  • Fear feels like intuition
  • Trauma feels like truth
  • Collective pain feels like your own
  • Confusion feels like guidance

This is why discernment begins with physiological calm.

Try:

• Breathwork:

Inhale for 4 counts, exhale for 4 counts.

• Body Scan:

Notice tension or energy blocks and breathe into those areas.

• Safety Statements:

“I am present in my body.”
“I am safe.”
“I am here.”

When your body believes it is safe, your mind becomes clearer.

Create an Energetic Boundary

Visualize a sphere of light or a protective energetic container around your body.

State your intention clearly:

“I receive only the energy and guidance aligned with my highest good and the highest good of all.”

This boundary helps you differentiate:

  • What belongs to you
  • What belongs to the collective
  • What stems from old trauma
  • What comes from an aligned, healed state

You are a witness—not a sponge. Your role is to carry what is yours, not the weight of the world.

How to Tell If Guidance Is Healed or Unhealed

The divine field does not usually communicate with words.
It communicates through energy, sensation, and feeling.

Healed guidance feels:

  • Expansive
  • Warm
  • Light
  • Loving
  • Unified
  • Peaceful

Unhealed energy feels:

  • Constrictive
  • Heavy
  • Fear-based
  • Divisive
  • Anxious
  • Confusing

Contraction is a signal of something unhealed—either within you or in the collective.

Is This Mine or the Collective?

This is one of the most important discernment questions.

You can even use your body to test it:

  • Stand and ask: “Is this mine?”
  • If your body moves forward → Yes. It is yours to heal.
  • If your body moves back → No. It belongs to the collective.

If it is not yours, say:

“You are not welcome in my space. I send you back to the collective. You are not mine to carry.”

Your body often knows long before your mind does.

Pay Attention to Physical Sensations

Your body communicates clearly:

  • Tension: something unhealed
  • Warmth: alignment
  • Lightness: clarity, truth
  • Pressure: could be either—slow down and check

Ask yourself:
Does this feel loving or does this feel constricted?

Love expands. Fear contracts.

Explore Your Beliefs and Conditioning

Your interpretation of guidance is shaped by:

  • Childhood experiences
  • Trauma
  • Family patterns
  • Cultural beliefs
  • Religious teachings
  • Societal conditioning

Ask yourself:

  • Am I seeing this through fear or old trauma?
  • Does this belief cause harm to me or others?
  • Is this coming from ego or deeper awareness?
  • Am I trying to control something?
  • Am I wanting power over someone or needing external validation?

Healed energy empowers.
Unhealed energy controls, shames, or divides.

Journal to Separate Old Stories From Inner Truth

Writing is one of the most effective ways to develop discernment.
Try journaling:

  • What you’re sensing
  • Emotional reactions
  • Patterns
  • What expands you
  • What contracts you

Discernment becomes much easier when you know what your non-negotiables are.

Test the “Fruit” of the Guidance

A powerful question:

What happens when you follow the guidance?

Aligned guidance brings:

  • Clarity
  • Calm
  • Love
  • Connection

Unhealed energy brings:

  • Fear
  • Judgment
  • Separation
  • Chaos
  • Inner distress

Healed energy always expands.
Unhealed energy contracts.

Stay Curious, Humble, and Open

Even true intuitive guidance can contain blind spots.
Your understanding will deepen over time.

Ask:

  • “Is there more here than I can currently see?”
  • “How can I refine this awareness?”

Discernment is not a destination—it's an ongoing, evolving practice.

Return to the Core: Love, Peace, Unity

These three qualities are the pure essence of the divine field.

When you embody them:

  • Guidance becomes clearer
  • Your channel becomes safer
  • You stop absorbing trauma
  • You align with your highest good

If a message disrupts love, peace, or unity, treat it as distortion—not truth.

You Are a Vessel, Not the Totality

You are:

  • A channel
  • A participant in the field
  • A co-creator of healing
  • A witness to what arises

Take a deep breath.
Feel your body grounded and open.

You have the tools for loving, safe, empowered discernment.
Like all meaningful spiritual skills, it strengthens with practice.
